What a cleanser actually does to body skin

A cleanser lifts sweat, surface oils, and environmental residue so water can carry them away. How aggressively it does that — and what it leaves on the skin surface — depends almost entirely on the format and its surfactant system. Most people over-cleanse and under-moisturise. Both problems often start with the wrong format.

Three formats compared

  • Bar: Best for dry or normal body skin, minimalist kit, travel. Syndet bars are gentler than old soap.
  • Gel / foam: Best for oily areas, humid climates, post-gym. Varies widely in gentleness.
  • Cleansing oil: Best for dry body skin, after shaving, winter legs. Apply to dry or damp skin, emulsify with water, rinse fully.
