How to Use a Body Gua Sha Tool

Glide the tool across oiled skin using firm, upward strokes to promote circulation and reduce tension.

It works, but the Instagram before-and-after photos are mostly lighting and angles.

  1. Prep your skin. Apply body oil or lotion generously to clean, dry skin. The tool needs slip to move smoothly without dragging or irritating your skin.
  2. Start with light pressure. Hold the tool at a 15-30 degree angle and begin with gentle strokes. Your skin should show slight redness, not deep marks or bruising.
  3. Work in sections. Move the tool in long, upward strokes toward your heart. Start from your ankles up to your thighs, then from your wrists to your shoulders.
  4. Focus on problem areas. Spend extra time on tight spots like IT bands or shoulders. Use smaller, more focused movements but maintain the same gentle pressure.
  5. Clean afterward. Wash the tool with soap and warm water, then dry completely. Store it somewhere clean to prevent bacteria buildup.
