How to Do a Whole-Body AHA Routine

Start with 2-3% AHA body lotion twice weekly, shower first, apply to damp skin, and always follow with SPF during the day.

Most people overthink this—your body skin is tougher than your face, so don't baby it with microscopic percentages that do nothing.

  1. Choose your strength. Start with 2-3% glycolic or lactic acid for beginners, 5-7% once your skin adapts. Lactic acid is gentler for sensitive skin, glycolic penetrates deeper for stubborn texture.
  2. Prep your skin. Shower with lukewarm water and a gentle cleanser. Pat skin until slightly damp but not dripping—AHAs absorb better on damp skin.
  3. Apply strategically. Work from feet up to avoid dripping product where you don't want it. Focus on rough areas like elbows, knees, and heels but avoid broken skin or recent shaving cuts.
  4. Time it right. Apply at night only—AHAs increase sun sensitivity. Start twice weekly, increase gradually if skin tolerates well.
  5. Follow through. Use SPF 30+ daily on any area that sees sun. Skip retinol or other actives on AHA nights to prevent irritation.
