How to Build a Whole-Body Retinol Routine Without Destroying Your Skin
Start with your face, add one body area every two weeks, and always buffer with moisturizer on thinner skin.
Your body skin is tougher than your face but also more neglected — it needs time to learn what retinol is before you go full throttle.
- Start face-first. Get your face comfortable with retinol before touching your body. Use it consistently for at least a month without irritation. Your face will teach you how your skin responds.
- Map your body zones. Chest and upper arms first, then thighs and calves, finally hands and feet. Avoid inner arms, inner thighs, and anywhere skin folds. These areas are too sensitive for beginners.
- Use the sandwich method. Apply moisturizer, wait five minutes, apply retinol, wait another five minutes, then seal with more moisturizer. This buffers the retinol and prevents over-drying on body skin that's not used to active ingredients.
- Time it right. Start once weekly on each new body area. Add frequency only after two weeks of zero irritation. Never apply retinol before sun exposure or after hot showers when skin is compromised.
