How to Exfoliate Your Body Without Wrecking Your Skin

Exfoliate 2-3 times weekly using circular motions on damp skin, then moisturize immediately while skin is still slightly wet.

The beauty industry wants you to believe you need seventeen different scrubs when a washcloth and consistency will give you better skin than any luxury exfoliant.

  1. Choose your weapon. Physical scrubs work for most people, but chemical exfoliants with AHA or BHA are gentler for sensitive skin. Your washcloth counts as exfoliation too, so don't double up unnecessarily.
  2. Prep your canvas. Start with warm water and damp skin—never bone dry. Your skin should be soft and slightly swollen from moisture, which makes dead cells easier to remove without micro-tears.
  3. Work in sections. Use firm but not aggressive circular motions, starting from your feet and working up. Pay extra attention to elbows, knees, and heels where skin naturally builds up thicker layers.
  4. Lock it in immediately. Apply body oil or thick moisturizer within three minutes of stepping out of the shower while your skin is still damp. This traps water and prevents the tight, stripped feeling.
