Sun Protection Factor, or SPF, serves as a measurement of how well a product filters out ultraviolet B radiation. The difference between SPF 30 and SPF 50 is often misunderstood as a linear increase in protection. Clarity on these figures helps in selecting a product that fits your daily requirements.
Higher numbers are not indicative of longer wear time. Regardless of the rating, reapplication remains the primary necessity for maintaining coverage.
- Measure the required quantity. Dispense a nickel-sized amount for the face and a shot-glass volume for the body. Under-application is the most frequent cause of ineffective protection. Accuracy in volume ensures the SPF rating on the bottle is achieved on the skin.
- Apply to clean skin. Distribute the product in small, even dots across the intended area. Using small portions prevents streaks and ensures no patch of skin is left bare. Start from the center and move outward to cover all extremities.
- Ensure complete coverage. Pay particular attention to the ears, the back of the hands, and the nape of the neck. These areas are frequently missed during routine application. A mirror may assist in confirming that no sections were skipped.
- Wait for absorption. Allow the formula to set for several minutes before exposure to external elements. This time allows the film to stabilize on the skin surface. This stabilization is required for the product to function as intended.
