Sunscreen Reapplication After Swimming

Exposure to water significantly disrupts the integrity of topical sun protection. Regardless of claims regarding water resistance, the mechanical action of exiting a pool or ocean, paired with the friction of a towel, removes a meaningful portion of your protective layer.

Mastering the timing of reapplication ensures that you remain protected during long afternoons outdoors. Consistency is the primary factor in effective sun care.

  1. Dry the skin completely. After exiting the water, use a clean towel to pat the skin dry. Moisture droplets create a barrier that prevents the formula from adhering to the surface of the skin. Do not rush this step as wet skin will cause the product to streak.
  2. Distribute product in sections. Apply the product to one limb at a time rather than attempting to cover the entire body at once. This ensures that no patches are missed during the process. Use firm, sweeping motions to ensure an even film.
  3. Focus on high-exposure zones. Pay extra attention to the shoulders, the bridge of the nose, and the tops of the feet. These areas are prone to faster product degradation due to their prominence and proximity to reflected light. Apply a secondary layer to these points to ensure uniform density.
  4. Allow for stabilization. Wait at least seven minutes before returning to direct sunlight or entering the water again. This period allows the film-forming agents in the sunscreen to set and adhere to the skin. Movement during this window may displace the protective layer.
A thin layer is no layer at all when dealing with water exposure.
