Maintaining Dark Hair Gloss

Dark hair reflects less light than lighter shades because the hair cuticle remains densely packed with pigment. A clear gloss treatment is a semi-permanent method to fill in surface imperfections along the hair shaft. This process smooths the cuticle to encourage high-shine reflection.

Perform this treatment on clean hair to ensure uniform distribution. It provides cosmetic luster rather than a structural change.

  1. Clean and clarify. Wash hair with a clarifying shampoo to remove residue or buildup from styling products. Do not use a heavy conditioner or mask during this wash. Towel-dry until the hair is damp but not dripping.
  2. Prepare the solution. Combine the clear gloss formula with the provided developer according to the manufacturer ratios. Stir the mixture in a non-metallic bowl until the texture is uniform. Ensure the room is well-ventilated before beginning the application.
  3. Apply to sections. Divide the hair into four distinct quadrants. Use a brush to apply the gloss from roots to ends, working through thin horizontal sections to ensure total saturation. Avoid pulling on the hair while the solution is applied to prevent breakage.
  4. Wait for saturation. Allow the gloss to process for the duration specified on the packaging, usually fifteen minutes. Do not cover the hair with a plastic cap unless instructed, as some formulas require oxygen to develop correctly. Monitor the texture throughout the wait time.
  5. Emulsify and wash. Rinse the hair thoroughly with lukewarm water until the stream runs clear. Apply a small amount of color-safe conditioner to close the cuticle. Rinse again and proceed to air-dry or style as usual.
A clear gloss treats the cuticle, not the pigment, to maximize light reflection on dark hair.
