Choosing Between Full and Partial Highlights

Determining the scope of your highlight service depends on your current hair colour and the desired final effect. A full head application involves placing foils throughout the entire scalp, whereas a partial or half head application targets specific zones to maximize visibility while preserving the integrity of the remaining hair.

Understanding these distinctions prevents over-processing and allows for a more sustainable maintenance schedule. Assessing your natural growth pattern and existing colour distribution is the first step in this process.

  1. Partition the hair precisely. Divide your hair into four distinct quadrants, starting from the center of the forehead down to the nape. Use sectioning clips to isolate these areas, as clean divisions are necessary to keep the lightener contained within specific zones. A clear part ensures you do not inadvertently overlap product on previously treated hair.
  2. Determine the zones. Identify the top, sides, and back of the head. For a half head application, isolate the crown and the temples, leaving the nape and lower back sections untouched. For a full head application, systematically map the entire circumference of the head, ensuring consistent spacing between foils to maintain an even visual density.
  3. Apply product to the targeted zones. Begin your application at the front, working towards the back in thin, consistent horizontal slices. Ensure the product is saturated at the root to avoid banding, but stop exactly where the hair is already lightened. Check the thickness of your slices to ensure uniform lift across the chosen areas.
  4. Monitor the lift time. Allow the product to process according to the instructions on the packaging, checking every ten minutes to ensure the desired tone is reached. Wipe a small section of hair with a damp paper towel to gauge the colour shift. Never exceed the recommended processing time to protect the hair structure.
  5. Remove all residue thoroughly. Rinse the foils with lukewarm water, removing them one by one to ensure no lightener remains on the scalp or strands. Shampoo twice to ensure complete neutralization of the product. Follow with a conditioning treatment to restore moisture to the hair.
Selective placement is the foundation of long-term hair health and aesthetic consistency.
