Choosing the Correct Hair Toner Pigment

Hair toners are semi-permanent deposits designed to adjust the undertones of bleached or lightened hair. They do not lighten the hair; instead, they fill the hair shaft with pigment to correct unwanted warmth or enhance existing tones. Understanding the colour wheel is essential for selecting the correct shade.

Selecting the wrong pigment will result in a colour shift that does not meet your goals. Follow this guide to match your hair level to the appropriate corrective pigment.

  1. Evaluate your current hair colour. Examine your hair in natural light to identify the dominant undertone. If you see bright yellow, you need violet. If you see orange, you need blue or ash. If your hair is dull or grey, you may require pearl.
  2. Mix the toner formula. Combine your toner pigment with the recommended low-volume developer according to the manufacturer instructions. Use a non-metallic bowl and brush. Ensure the consistency is uniform before proceeding.
  3. Apply to damp hair. Toner absorbs more evenly on damp, towel-dried hair. Section your hair into four quadrants and apply the mixture starting from the mid-lengths, ending at the roots. Work quickly to ensure even coverage across all sections.
  4. Monitor the processing time. Process the toner for the exact time specified in the directions. Check a small strand every few minutes to avoid over-pigmentation. If the hair begins to look dark or muddy, remove the product immediately.
  5. Rinse and neutralise. Rinse your hair with cool water until the stream runs clear. Follow with a gentle, colour-safe shampoo and conditioner to close the cuticle. Pat hair dry with a microfibre towel to prevent friction.
Toner is a corrective tool for undertones, not a permanent solution for colour change.
