A Guide to Root Touch-Ups at Home
Maintaining consistent hair colour requires a methodical approach to the root line. When the natural pigment begins to emerge, the goal is to deposit pigment only on the regrowth to avoid overlapping or bands of excess colour.
This method utilizes temporary, washout pigment sprays or powder compacts. It does not replace permanent chemical coloring, but rather extends the time between professional appointments.
- Prepare a clean sectioning. Wash and dry your hair completely before beginning. Moisture will prevent even adherence of the pigment. Use a tail comb to create a straight center part and pull the remaining hair back into a secure, low ponytail to keep it clear of the application area.
- Apply the pigment. Hold the spray canister six inches from the head or use the applicator brush for powders. Apply the pigment in short, light bursts along the visible root line. Move steadily from the hairline toward the crown, focusing only on the areas where the natural shade is visible.
- Blend the pigment. Use a clean, dense-bristled brush to gently buff the pigment into the roots. This motion softens any harsh lines where the product meets the pre-coloured hair. Ensure you do not drag the pigment down the hair shaft further than necessary.
- Set the finish. Wait for the pigment to dry completely, which usually takes several minutes. Once dry, run a wide-tooth comb through the roots to loosen any stuck hair fibers. If using a spray, a light mist of setting spray can ensure the pigment remains in place until the next wash.
Precision in application ensures the regrowth is masked without compromising the health of your hair.
