Maintaining Highlighted Roots at Home

Maintaining highlights at home requires patience and a systematic approach to avoid uneven banding. The objective is not a total colour change, but a subtle diffusion of the regrowth line. Focus on the crown and the hairline to maintain the illusion of depth and dimension.

This guide assumes you are using a non-lifting, demi-permanent gloss or a toning mousse to soften the contrast. If the regrowth is significantly darker than the mid-lengths, focus on consistency rather than rapid transformation.

  1. Section and protect. Part your hair exactly where you normally wear it. Use a tail comb to create clean sections, clipping away hair that does not require treatment. Apply a thin layer of barrier balm to the hairline to prevent skin staining.
  2. Combine the components. Pour the pigment and the developer into a plastic bowl, following the ratio specified by the product manufacturer. Mix with a brush until the consistency is uniform and free of lumps. Work quickly, as the product begins to oxidize upon contact with air.
  3. Paint the regrowth. Load the brush and apply the product directly to the roots in quarter-inch sections. Work from the front of the hairline toward the back of the crown. Use the tip of the brush to dab the product, ensuring you stay within the regrowth area to prevent overlapping.
  4. Monitor the development. Set a timer according to the instructions provided. Use this time to clean any stray marks on your forehead or ears with a damp cloth. Do not cover the hair with a plastic cap, as the heat can accelerate the process and lead to unpredictable colour shifts.
  5. Rinse and finish. Rinse the product out with lukewarm water until the stream runs perfectly clear. Apply a light conditioner specifically formulated for colour-treated hair. Avoid shampooing for the next twenty-four hours to allow the cuticle to settle.
Precision in application is the only way to avoid banding on highlighted hair.
