A Guide to Diffusing Curls Without Frizz
The primary cause of frizz during the drying process is mechanical disturbance of the hair strands while they are wet. When water evaporates too quickly or the hair is moved aggressively, the cuticle layer lifts, resulting in a loss of definition. Diffusing is a deliberate act of using controlled, dispersed heat to set a style in place.
The objective is to encourage the hair to dry in its natural formation without interference. By minimizing touch and moderating heat, the resulting curl remains uniform and smooth. Follow this protocol to achieve consistent results during your standard wash-and-set routine.
- Remove excess water. After applying your hold product, use a cotton t-shirt to gently squeeze out excess moisture. Do not rub the hair or use a standard terrycloth towel, as the friction will immediately create frizz. Your hair should be damp to the touch, not dripping.
- Set the diffuser. Attach your diffuser bowl to your hairdryer before turning the device on. Select the lowest speed setting and the lowest heat setting. High velocity will blow the hair out of its curl pattern, while high heat can cause the product film to crack and frizz.
- Hover diffuse. Before placing the diffuser bowl against the hair, hover it around your head. Move the dryer in circular motions around your curls without touching them. This initial stage locks the product into the cuticle layer without mechanical disturbance.
- Cup and lift. Once the hair is approximately 50 percent dry, gently place sections of hair into the diffuser bowl. Bring the bowl toward the scalp and hold for thirty seconds before moving to the next section. Do not move the diffuser while it is in contact with the hair.
- The cooling phase. Switch your dryer to the cold shot button for the final few minutes of drying. Cooling the hair helps to seal the cuticle and fix the curl pattern in place. Ensure the hair is completely dry before moving on to styling or shaking out the roots.
The secret to frizz-free curls is stillness; touch the hair as little as possible.
