A Manual for Scalp Massage
Scalp massage is a mechanical process intended to mobilize the tissue of the scalp. For those with high-density hair, the challenge lies in reaching the skin surface without causing friction or tangling the hair fibers. This technique relies on steady, rhythmic movement rather than force.
The intent is to increase local microcirculation. Consistent application helps maintain scalp suppleness, which provides an ideal environment for hair health.
- Positioning your hands. Part your hair into four sections if necessary to expose the skin. Place the pads of your four fingers on each side of the head. Avoid using your fingernails to prevent scratching the surface.
- Engaging the tissue. Press down into the scalp until you feel the underlying skull. Move the skin in small, circular motions. Do not rub the skin over the hair, which creates friction. Ensure the fingers move the scalp itself.
- Systematic coverage. Work from the hairline toward the crown. Maintain contact at all times. Move in one-inch increments to ensure the entire surface is covered systematically.
- Finishing the cycle. Conclude by using sweeping motions starting from the temple moving toward the back of the head. This distributes the pressure and eases tension. Once finished, allow your scalp to rest without further manipulation.
The scalp is a flexible tissue; move it gently to maintain its resilience.
