A Guide to Decanting Beauty Products
Decanting products is a standard practice for maintaining one's routine while away from home. The process requires patience and the correct tools to avoid spilling viscous liquids or losing product to the sides of a funnel. When done with precision, the contents of your primary bottles remain fresh and your luggage remains clean.
Follow this method to ensure a spill-free transfer of shampoos, conditioners, and oils. Accuracy during this stage prevents the need for cleanup later.
- Sanitize your vessels. Ensure all destination bottles are dry and free of debris. Use isopropyl alcohol to wipe the interior if they are being reused. Allow them to air dry completely to avoid bacterial growth.
- Select the proper funnel. Match the diameter of the funnel stem to the opening of your travel bottle. A wide-mouth funnel is suitable for thick conditioners, while a narrow stem is necessary for thin oils. If you lack a funnel, use a clean pipette for controlled placement.
- Execute the pour. Hold the source bottle at a forty-five degree angle to control the flow. Pour slowly into the funnel, leaving at least one centimeter of space at the top of the travel bottle. Rapid pouring creates air pockets that lead to overflow.
- Clear the bottleneck. Once the container is filled, lift the funnel carefully to prevent excess droplets from landing on the threads of the bottle. Wipe any residue from the neck with a clean cloth. Clean threads are necessary for a tight seal that prevents leaking.
- Seal and label. Cap the bottle tightly and check the seal. Apply a label indicating the product name and the date of decanting. Storing products for extended periods in secondary containers can affect their efficacy.
A clean transfer begins with the right funnel and ends with a secured cap.
