Cushion Compacts: Achieving a Dewy Finish

Cushion compacts rely on a porous sponge reservoir saturated with liquid makeup. This delivery system allows for a thinner application than traditional bottled foundations or creams. The resulting finish is inherently dewy, as the liquid formula typically retains a high moisture content upon contact with the skin surface.

Correct technique is necessary to prevent cakey accumulation or uneven patches. By treating the applicator as a stamp rather than a brush, you maximize the product's natural reflection and hydration.

  1. Prep the surface. Cleanse and moisturize your skin thoroughly before starting. Allow your moisturizer to absorb for at least three minutes. A base that is too wet will cause the cushion product to slip; a base that is too dry will show texture.
  2. Load the puff. Press the provided air-puff gently into the cushion reservoir. Do not force the puff deep into the sponge, as this will release too much product. A light tap is sufficient to pick up enough for one quadrant of the face.
  3. Stamp and press. Start at the center of the face and stamp the puff outward. Use a pressing motion rather than a dragging motion. This ensures the pigments sit on the surface to reflect light rather than being wiped away.
  4. Build selectively. Evaluate coverage after the first pass. Only apply additional product to areas that require further correction. Over-applying cushion foundation often leads to pilling or excessive shine in the T-zone.
  5. Final check. Look at your skin in natural light. If the finish appears too wet or oily, use a clean sponge or a tissue to gently blot the T-zone. Avoid powder unless strictly necessary, as it will negate the dewy effect.
A thin layer is the secret to a believable, light-reflective finish.
