Achieving a Dewy Finish on Oily Skin

The primary challenge with oily skin is managing sebum production while aiming for a luminous aesthetic. A dewy finish is fundamentally about light reflection, not excess oil on the skin surface. By controlling the placement of radiance and ensuring the underlying canvas is matte, you can achieve a healthy glow that lasts throughout the day.

This method relies on strategic product placement rather than overall application of high-shine formulas. Follow these steps to maintain control over your complexion.

  1. Prep the T-zone with a mattifying primer. Apply a pea-sized amount of mattifying primer exclusively to your forehead, nose, and chin. These areas are prone to high oil output and will naturally provide the shine you do not want. Focus the product into the pores to create a smooth, light-absorbing base. Let the primer settle for sixty seconds before proceeding to makeup.
  2. Apply a natural-finish foundation. Select a foundation labeled as natural or demi-matte. Apply a thin layer starting from the center of the face and blending outward. The goal is to provide coverage without added emollients that exacerbate oiliness. Avoid foundations marketed as luminous or radiant, as these will eventually break down on oily skin.
  3. Set the center of the face. Use a translucent pressed powder to set the T-zone, under-eye area, and any other oily spots. A pressed powder offers more control than a loose formula. Press the powder into the skin rather than dusting it on top. This creates a secure layer that prevents the foundation from sliding throughout the day.
  4. Strategic highlighting. Apply a powder or balm-based highlighter only to the high points of the face, specifically the tops of the cheekbones and the bridge of the nose. By placing the glow only where light naturally hits, you create a dewy effect without making the entire face look greasy. Avoid placing any product on the center of the forehead or chin.
  5. Seal with a mattifying setting spray. Finish the look by misting a mattifying setting spray over the face. This locks the powder and foundation in place while removing any powdery residue left behind. A mattifying spray helps regulate the surface texture throughout the day, ensuring your skin remains in a balanced state.
