SPF as Your Base: Integrating Daily Protection

Most makeup routines rely on silicone-heavy primers to create a surface for foundation. This approach often ignores the necessity of consistent environmental protection as the foundation of your regimen. By making a high-factor broad-spectrum sunscreen your first product, you create a functional base that performs double duty.

Transitioning your routine to prioritize sunscreen requires precision in application and timing. The goal is a uniform, non-pilling layer that sits comfortably under makeup without compromising its integrity.

  1. Clean and dry the surface. Begin with a clean face using a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Pat the skin completely dry with a clean towel. Residual moisture can cause sunscreen to streak or struggle to set properly.
  2. Apply sunscreen in sections. Dispense the product onto your fingertips rather than your palms. Work in sections—cheeks, forehead, then T-zone—using light, tapping motions. This prevents the product from gathering in creases.
  3. Allow for complete absorption. Leave the sunscreen undisturbed for three full minutes. Touching or applying makeup during this stage is the primary cause of pilling. The product must set to create an even, film-like surface.
  4. Apply makeup with a pressing motion. When applying foundation or concealer, avoid dragging tools across the skin. Use a damp sponge to press product onto the SPF base. A gentle, stippling motion ensures the protective layer remains intact.
Sunscreen is the only base your skin requires before color.
