The Correct Order for Skincare Application
Product layering is a matter of physics rather than preference. To achieve optimal performance from your routine, you must apply substances in order of their molecular weight and consistency. Lighter products must penetrate the surface before heavier, occlusive barriers are established.
Applying an oil before a water-based essence will inhibit the absorption of the latter. Follow this guide to ensure your application sequence aligns with the functional requirements of your inventory.
- Cleanse and prepare. Begin with a clean canvas. Use a gentle cleanser to remove surface debris and oils. Pat the skin dry with a clean cloth, leaving the surface slightly damp to facilitate the absorption of subsequent water-based formulas.
- Apply lightweight essences. Start with your thinnest product. If you use a toner or a water-based essence, dispense a small amount into clean palms. Press the liquid into the skin rather than rubbing to ensure even coverage without mechanical irritation.
- Layer serums and treatments. Apply water-based serums next. These formulations contain smaller molecules designed to penetrate deep into the outer layer. Gently massage these onto the face and neck using upward, outward motions.
- Seal with moisturizer. Follow with your moisturizer. This step is intended to hydrate and lock in the previous layers. Choose a texture that corresponds to your environment and personal comfort.
- Final barrier protection. If your routine requires an oil or a final occlusive layer, apply it last. This step prevents transepidermal water loss. If you are applying sunscreen in the morning, do so as the final step before makeup.
Consistency of formula determines the order of application.
