Using AHAs in Your Morning Routine
Alpha hydroxy acids are designed to dissolve the bonds holding surface-level dead cells to the skin. While traditional guidance often reserves these ingredients for evening use, morning application is functional if specific logistical requirements are met. The primary goal is to maintain the barrier while providing a polished surface for subsequent product layers.
Transitioning an exfoliant to the morning requires strict adherence to sun protection protocols. Without consistent daylight defense, the efficacy of the exfoliation is negated by increased vulnerability to environmental stress. Follow this protocol to integrate the ingredient safely.
- Gentle surface cleansing. Begin with a pH-balanced cleanser to remove residual oils from the overnight cycle. Ensure the skin is completely dry before applying any active product. Moisture acts as a conduit for penetration, and damp skin can cause an acid to absorb too quickly, leading to unnecessary irritation.
- Targeted acid application. Dispense a small amount of your chosen AHA onto clean fingertips. Apply in firm, upward strokes, avoiding the immediate orbital area. Ensure the product is distributed evenly across the surface of the forehead, cheeks, and chin.
- Neutralization period. Allow the product to fully absorb and dry down for at least three minutes. Do not layer additional serums or moisturizers until the skin feels entirely dry to the touch. This wait time prevents the active ingredient from being diluted or neutralized by other formulas.
- Barrier reinforcement. Follow with a lightweight moisturizer that supports the lipid barrier. Choose a formula containing ceramides or glycerin to counteract potential dryness. This step is mandatory to lock in the benefits of the exfoliation.
- Sun protection application. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen with at least SPF 30. Because AHAs increase light sensitivity, this is the most critical step of the morning. Reapply as needed throughout the day if you are outdoors.
Exfoliation in the morning is only as effective as the sunscreen applied immediately afterward.
