Balancing Retinoids and Exfoliants

Integrating topical retinoids alongside chemical exfoliants requires structural discipline to maintain the integrity of the barrier. Attempting to use these ingredients in a single application often results in irritation and unnecessary redness. Success relies entirely on separation and timing.

This guide outlines a rotation schedule designed to accommodate both ingredients without overlapping them. Adhering to this structure prevents the common pitfalls associated with over-application.

  1. Cleanse and dry thoroughly. Begin with a neutral, soap-free cleanser to remove surface debris. Pat the skin completely dry with a clean towel. Residual moisture can increase the rate of ingredient penetration, which may lead to unwanted sensitivity.
  2. Apply your exfoliant on nights A. Select an evening designated for chemical exfoliation. Apply a thin, even layer of your chosen acid-based product across the face, avoiding the immediate eye area. Do not layer other concentrated actives on top of this.
  3. Apply your retinoid on nights B. On alternate evenings, apply your retinoid. Dispense a pea-sized amount and distribute it across the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Blend until absorbed. Ensure this is the only treatment step for the evening.
  4. Seal with a basic moisturizer. Finish every application with a standard, non-active moisturizer. This provides an occlusive layer that supports the skin barrier. Avoid formulas containing additional fragrance or secondary actives at this stage.
Consistency is achieved through rotation, not intensity.
