Choosing Between Glycolic and Mandelic Acids
Alpha-hydroxy acids function by loosening the connections between superficial skin cells to facilitate surface renewal. Choosing between glycolic and mandelic acid depends primarily on the desired depth of penetration and individual tolerance for surface activity. Both belong to the same chemical family, yet their molecular structures dictate how they interact with the skin barrier.
Glycolic acid features the smallest molecular structure of the alpha-hydroxy acids, allowing for rapid and deep penetration. Conversely, mandelic acid possesses a larger molecular structure, which limits its rate of absorption and often results in a more gradual surface response. Understanding this distinction is the prerequisite for selecting an appropriate exfoliant for your routine.
- Perform a thorough cleanse. Use a pH-balanced cleanser to remove sebum, debris, and surface pollutants. Ensure the skin is entirely free of residual product before applying an acid. Pat the skin completely dry with a clean towel, as damp skin can accelerate the absorption of the acid and increase the risk of irritation.
- Apply the chosen acid. Dispense a small amount of the chosen glycolic or mandelic liquid onto a cotton pad or your clean fingertips. Gently sweep the solution across the face, avoiding the immediate eye area and the lips. Do not layer the product or rub the skin aggressively.
- Allow for neutral absorption. Wait for the product to absorb fully into the skin. The goal is to let the acid conduct its function without interference from subsequent layers. Ensure the surface feels dry to the touch before proceeding to the final stage of the sequence.
- Seal with a simple hydrator. Apply a basic, fragrance-free moisturizer to reinforce the moisture barrier. The objective here is hydration, not further active treatment. Avoid heavy oils or complex serums that might clash with the freshly exfoliated surface.
- Observe the skin response. Monitor the skin for any signs of tightness or excessive heat throughout the following day. Adjust the frequency of application based on how the skin looks and feels. If the skin feels raw, extend the duration between applications.
Molecular size dictates the depth of the exfoliation; larger molecules work slower and more superficially.
