Vitamin C in Moisturisers: Finding the Correct Balance

Vitamin C is a staple ingredient in many moisturisers, yet confusion remains regarding the optimal concentration required for efficacy. The market offers a wide spectrum of percentages, ranging from subtle inclusions to potent formulations. Understanding what constitutes an appropriate level is essential for selecting a product that serves your specific daily needs without causing unnecessary irritation.

Higher concentrations do not inherently equate to better results for every user. Instead, the stability of the specific derivative used in the formula is often more indicative of how the product will perform on your skin. This guide clarifies how to identify the right amount for your routine.

  1. Check the ingredient list. Locate the ingredient list on your packaging to identify the specific form of vitamin C used. Common derivatives like magnesium ascorbyl phosphate or ascorbyl glucoside are often found in concentrations between 1% and 5%. If pure l-ascorbic acid is present, look for a concentration between 5% and 10% for a standard daily moisturiser.
