How to apply a flawless base.
You have been told to prep oily skin with oil-control primers, set with powder immediately, and reapply throughout the day. The result is a thick mask that oxidises orange by 2pm, settles into pores, and requires constant maintenance. None of this is necessary.
A flawless base on oily skin requires the opposite approach. Thin layers. No powder until the end. A damp sponge instead of a brush. This routine takes three minutes and lasts until you remove it.
- Start with skin that feels slightly damp.. Apply your moisturiser and wait exactly thirty seconds. Your skin should feel cool and slightly tacky — not wet, not fully absorbed. Foundation applied to bone-dry skin sits on top and slides. Foundation applied to damp skin bonds with the surface and stays put. If you touch your cheek and it feels completely dry, mist with thermal water and wait ten seconds.
- Apply foundation with a damp sponge.. Dot foundation on your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Wet a makeup sponge under the tap, squeeze out excess water until it stops dripping, then bounce the sponge over your face in short pressing motions. Do not swipe. Bouncing presses product into skin without dragging or streaking. The damp sponge thins the formula so it sits as a second skin instead of a layer. If the sponge starts to feel dry or sticky, re-wet it.
- Wait for the base to set.. Put the sponge down and wait fifteen seconds. Touch your cheek lightly. It should feel dry to the touch but not powdery. This is the foundation bonding to your skin oils. If you powder or touch your face before this happens, you disturb the setting process and the base will slide later. Fifteen seconds is long enough. Any longer and you risk the foundation drying unevenly.
- Build coverage only where you need it.. Look at your face in natural light. If redness or darkness shows through on your cheeks or under-eyes, add a second layer there only. Use the same damp sponge and bouncing motion. Do not add more foundation all over your face. Oily skin produces enough natural sheen that a thin base looks luminous. A thick base looks mask-like and separates. After adding coverage, wait another ten seconds before moving to powder.
- Set the t-zone with translucent powder.. Dip a small fluffy brush into loose translucent powder, tap off the excess, and press the brush onto your forehead, nose, and chin. Press, do not sweep. Sweeping moves the foundation underneath. Pressing locks it down. Leave your cheeks untouched unless they are visibly oily. Powder everywhere makes oily skin look flat and ages the face. Powder only where oil appears makes the base last without looking heavy. If powder clings to dry patches, you used too much foundation in that area.
