Hyaluronic Acid: Morning Order

Hyaluronic acid is a humectant, a substance that pulls water toward the skin surface. When incorporated into a morning routine, its primary objective is to maintain moisture levels throughout the day. The efficacy of this molecule depends entirely on the hydration of the skin prior to application and the presence of an occlusive layer immediately following it.

Applying it to dry skin or leaving it exposed to dry air can reverse its intended function. Follow these instructions to ensure your morning routine effectively locks in hydration.

  1. Begin with a damp surface. Cleanse your face thoroughly with a gentle, non-stripping cleanser. Do not towel dry your skin completely after rinsing. Leaving the skin slightly damp provides the initial water source that the hyaluronic acid will bind to.
  2. Apply serum to face and neck. Dispense a small amount of hyaluronic acid serum onto your fingertips. Gently pat the product into the damp skin of the face and neck using upward motions. Ensure even distribution before the water evaporates from the skin surface.
  3. Seal with a humectant-friendly moisturizer. Apply a cream or lotion while the skin is still tacky from the serum. This step is critical, as a moisturizer acts as an occlusive agent, trapping the water that the humectant has pulled into the skin. Without this seal, the hydration will evaporate into the surrounding environment.
  4. Allow the layer to set. Wait approximately sixty seconds before moving on to sun protection or makeup. The skin should feel smooth and supple to the touch. Avoid aggressive rubbing, as this can disturb the film-forming properties of the moisturizer.
  5. Finish with sun protection. Apply a broad-spectrum sunscreen as the final step of your skincare routine. Ensure you cover all exposed areas evenly. Proper sun protection does not interfere with the hydration established in the previous steps.
Humectants must be sealed to remain effective.
