Layering Primer, Moisturiser, and SPF

Navigating a morning routine requires a strict order of operations to ensure every product performs as intended. Many assume products can be swapped or combined at will, but the chemical structure and intended function of moisturizers, sunscreens, and primers necessitate a specific sequence. This guide outlines how to layer these items for a cohesive finish.

Applying products in the incorrect order can lead to pilling, reduced product efficacy, and an uneven base. By following the standard of heaviest to lightest absorption, you maintain the integrity of your skin barrier and the longevity of your cosmetic wear.

  1. Apply moisturizer to clean skin. Begin by applying a dime-sized amount of moisturizer to freshly cleansed skin. Massage it in circular motions, focusing on areas prone to dryness. Allow this layer to settle for at least two minutes before proceeding. It must be fully absorbed to prevent the subsequent layers from sliding.
  2. Layer your SPF. Apply a generous amount of sunscreen to the face and neck. Using your fingers, distribute the product evenly across all exposed areas. Once applied, let the sunscreen sit undisturbed. This waiting period is critical to ensure a uniform film is formed, which is necessary for effective coverage.
  3. Add a thin layer of primer. Dispense a pea-sized amount of primer onto the back of your hand. Gently tap the product onto the center of the face and blend outward toward the hairline. Primer acts as a mechanical barrier between your skin and any later makeup application, so keep the layer thin to avoid buildup.
  4. Final settling. Allow the entire sequence to settle for one final minute before touching your face. This prevents the products from migrating or separating. Your skin should feel matte or hydrated, not damp to the touch.
Wait for each layer to fully dry; haste is the primary cause of product pilling.
