The Layering Rule for Eye Creams
The placement of eye cream relative to other facial products is a frequent point of contention in daily maintenance routines. Because the skin around the eyes is structurally distinct from the rest of the face, it requires a specific application order that prioritizes texture and viscosity.
Applying products in the incorrect sequence can lead to pilling or inefficient absorption of active ingredients. Following a logical layering order ensures each product serves its purpose without interference.
- Cleanse the entire face. Begin with a clean canvas. Use a gentle cleanser to remove debris and oils from the orbital area. Pat the skin dry with a clean cloth before proceeding.
- Apply your primary serum. Apply your facial serum as usual. Be careful to avoid the immediate lash line, as serums often contain potent ingredients that may irritate the delicate eye tissue.
- Apply the eye cream. Dot a pea-sized amount of eye cream along the orbital bone using your ring finger. The ring finger exerts the least pressure, preventing unnecessary stretching of the skin. Tap the product gently until it is absorbed.
- Seal with moisturizer. Apply your facial moisturizer over your entire face, including the area around the eyes. The moisturizer acts as an occlusive layer that seals in the hydration provided by the eye cream.
- Wait for absorption. Allow at least one minute for all products to set before applying makeup or sunscreen. This prevents the products from migrating or separating during the day.
Apply eye cream after your thin serums but before your thicker facial moisturizer.
