Layering Three Serums Correctly

Applying multiple serums requires an understanding of molecular weight and formulation thickness. When you stack three products, the primary objective is to allow each layer to penetrate the skin surface without causing pilling or product waste. Improper application order often leads to ineffective absorption or an uncomfortable, tacky residue.

This guide establishes the correct sequence for applying a sequence of three serums. By following these mechanical steps, you ensure that each product functions as intended.

  1. Prepare the surface. Cleanse your face thoroughly with a mild, non-stripping cleanser. Pat your skin until it is slightly damp, but not dripping. Applying serums to damp skin helps facilitate the movement of ingredients across the surface area.
  2. Apply the lightest viscosity. Dispense three drops of the thinnest, most watery serum into your palms. Press the product directly into the skin using a flat-handed motion. Move from the center of the face outward toward the hairline to ensure even coverage without pulling.
  3. Apply the medium and thick formulas. Allow sixty seconds for the first layer to settle. Follow with your medium-consistency serum, then conclude with the heaviest, most viscous formula. Always work from the thinnest texture to the thickest texture to prevent the heavier formulas from forming a barrier that blocks the lighter ones.
  4. Lock the layers. Once the third serum is applied, wait at least two minutes for the skin to feel dry to the touch. Seal the surface with a moisturizer to prevent trans-epidermal water loss. This final step serves as a buffer that keeps the serum components working against the skin.
Viscosity is the defining rule for layering multiple products.
