Using AHA Nightly: A Practical Guide
Alpha hydroxy acids are water-soluble agents used to address surface texture through the loosening of surface debris. When applied during the evening hours, they operate while the body is at rest, making them a standard addition to a preventative PM routine. Success with these acids depends on patience and a rigid adherence to moderation rather than application frequency.
The primary objective is the maintenance of a smooth surface. Overuse often results in a compromised barrier, which necessitates a cessation of all active products until the skin returns to its baseline state.
- Cleanse the surface. Begin with a mild, low-pH cleanser to remove daily grime. Ensure the skin is entirely free of dirt, oil, and remnants of makeup. Pat the face dry with a clean cloth, ensuring no moisture remains. Applying acid to damp skin can increase penetration depth, which is not the goal here.
- Measure the product. Dispense a small amount of the AHA formulation onto your fingertips. A quantity the size of a pea is sufficient for the entire face. Dot the product across the forehead, cheeks, and chin to ensure even distribution. Avoid the immediate eye area and the corners of the mouth entirely.
- Apply and wait. Gently massage the product into the skin using upward, circular motions. Do not rub aggressively. Once applied, allow the product to settle for at least three minutes before introducing any subsequent layers. This waiting period allows the acid to level out on the surface without interference from heavier emollients.
- Seal with moisture. Follow with a plain, fragrance-free moisturizer. Choose a formula that focuses on hydration and lipid replenishment. The goal is to create a buffer that keeps the surface comfortable until morning. Avoid layering other active ingredients immediately after an AHA application.
- Clean the tools. Rinse the bottle neck or dropper to ensure no crusting of the product occurs. Close the container tightly and store it in a cool, dark cabinet away from direct sunlight. Consistent storage conditions preserve the efficacy of the formulation.
Consistency in application frequency is superior to high-intensity, sporadic usage.
