Layering Hyaluronic Acid at Night

Hyaluronic acid acts as a humectant, meaning it pulls water toward itself. When applied to the skin, it draws moisture from the environment or from the deeper layers of the dermis to the surface. To prevent trans-epidermal water loss, the sequence of application determines whether the ingredient provides hydration or inadvertently dries the skin.

Applying your serum in the incorrect order disrupts the integrity of your moisture barrier. By following the standard rule of thinnest to thickest consistency, you ensure maximum efficacy for your nightly ritual.

  1. Cleanse and dampen. Begin with a clean face using a mild cleanser. Leave the skin slightly damp before application, as hyaluronic acid requires water to function. If you dry the face completely, the molecule may pull moisture from your skin cells rather than the air.
  2. Apply the serum. Dispense a pea-sized amount of the hyaluronic acid serum into your palms. Press the product directly into the damp skin of your face and neck. Avoid rubbing aggressively, as a pressing motion ensures even distribution without irritation.
  3. Seal the moisture. Apply a cream or oil-based moisturizer immediately while the serum is still tacky. The occlusive properties of the moisturizer create a physical barrier that prevents the water pulled in by the hyaluronic acid from evaporating.
  4. Final check. Ensure no areas of the face feel tight or dry. If the skin feels taut, apply an additional light layer of moisturizer over the affected area to lock in the remaining hydration. The skin should feel supple, not sticky, once the routine is complete.
A humectant is only as effective as the barrier you place on top of it.
