Peptides at Night: The Case for Consistency
Peptides are short chains of amino acids that serve as the fundamental building blocks of skin proteins. When applied topically, they act as support structures, helping the skin maintain a firm appearance and a resilient barrier. Unlike more aggressive ingredients, peptides require consistent, long-term application to demonstrate functional utility.
The evening hours provide the necessary window for these ingredients to sit on the skin without the interference of sunscreen or environmental stressors. Integrating them into your nightly routine is a matter of layering order rather than complex procedure.
- Cleanse the surface. Begin with a neutral, non-stripping cleanser. Remove all traces of daily debris, sunscreen, and particulate matter. Pat your skin dry with a clean, soft towel, leaving the surface slightly damp to aid absorption.
- Apply the peptide serum. Dispense a pea-sized amount of your peptide serum into your palms. Press the product gently into the skin of your face and neck. Focus on areas where the skin feels dry or lacks immediate suppleness.
- Allow for absorption. Wait approximately two minutes before proceeding to the next step. This allows the serum to settle into the upper layers of the skin. Do not rush this; a tacky finish is normal before it dries down.
- Seal with a moisturizer. Apply a basic, non-occlusive moisturizer to lock in the peptides. Use light, upward motions to distribute the product evenly. Ensure the neck and jawline receive an adequate amount of coverage as well.
- Finish with an eye cream. If you use an eye cream, apply it using your ring finger. Tap gently along the orbital bone, avoiding the immediate lash line. This completes the evening protection phase.
Peptides are support structures, not miracles. Consistency is the only metric that matters.
