Using Squalane as an Occlusive

Squalane is a hydrocarbon that mimics the skin's natural sebum. When used as an occlusive, it functions by creating a breathable barrier over the skin surface to trap hydration provided by previous steps in your routine.

Because it is stable and non-volatile, it does not evaporate quickly, making it a reliable choice for managing short-term dehydration. Use it in the final phase of your evening routine to maximize moisture retention while you sleep.

  1. Cleanse the surface. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove environmental debris. Rinse thoroughly with lukewarm water. Pat your skin until it is only slightly damp rather than soaking wet.
  2. Apply a humectant. Apply a water-based serum or toner containing humectants like glycerin or hyaluronic acid. This step provides the moisture that the squalane will later lock into the skin. Allow the product to absorb for thirty seconds.
  3. Distribute the squalane. Dispense two to three drops of squalane into your palms. Rub your hands together to warm the oil, then press it firmly into the skin. Focus on areas prone to dryness, such as the cheeks or around the mouth.
  4. Allow for absorption. Wait two minutes for the squalane to settle on the skin surface. Avoid layering heavy creams over the oil, as the oil is designed to be the final sealant in your sequence. If you must use a heavy cream, apply it before the oil.
Squalane serves as the final seal, locking hydration in place after your water-based treatments.
