Urea is a component of the skin's natural moisturizing factor. In topical form, it functions primarily to hydrate the surface layers by binding water and facilitating the softening of dense or dehydrated textures. Unlike heavier oils, urea remains weightless on the skin while providing a perceptible improvement in moisture retention.
Selecting a formulation requires attention to concentration levels. Lower percentages provide basic hydration, while higher percentages serve to assist in surface smoothing. Understanding this balance is the key to incorporating it into a daily regimen.
- Cleanse the surface. Begin with a mild, pH-balanced cleanser to remove environmental debris. Pat the skin with a soft towel until it is nearly dry. Do not scrub the skin, as friction may increase surface sensitivity.

- Final seal. Apply a light, non-occlusive layer of a standard moisturizer if required. This step is optional but provides an additional barrier for those in dry climates. Verify that the combined layers do not feel heavy or suffocating.
