Layering Vitamin C and Exfoliants

Integrating vitamin C and chemical exfoliants into a singular routine often leads to unnecessary irritation when performed simultaneously. These actives operate at different pH levels, which can neutralize their efficacy if applied in immediate succession. Managing brightness requires a structural separation rather than a layered cocktail approach.

The most effective strategy utilizes vitamin C for morning environmental defense and shifts exfoliation to the evening. This temporal separation ensures both agents remain stable and functional while minimizing the risk of adverse reactions.

  1. Morning vitamin C application. Cleanse the face with a neutral, non-stripping cleanser. Apply three to four drops of a stable vitamin C serum onto dry skin. Allow the product to absorb completely for sixty seconds before proceeding to a moisturizer or sun protection.
  2. Evening gentle cleansing. Remove surface debris and pollution from the day. Ensure the skin is entirely dry, as residual moisture can accelerate the absorption rate of exfoliants and increase potential sensitivity.
  3. Evening exfoliant application. Apply a small amount of your chosen exfoliant, such as a lactic or glycolic acid, in an even layer. Focus on areas of congestion or dullness. Avoid the immediate orbital area to prevent migration into the eyes.
  4. Recovery and moisture. Wait for the exfoliant to feel tacky on the surface, which indicates it has set. Follow with a barrier-repairing moisturizer containing ceramides or glycerin. This step locks in hydration lost during the exfoliation process.
  5. Sun protection maintenance. Exfoliation increases light sensitivity. Every morning, apply an SPF 30 or higher broad-spectrum sunscreen without exception. Consistency in UV protection preserves the brightening results achieved by your routine.
Separate by time to avoid the friction of conflicting chemical profiles.
