Toner Prep Before Exfoliation

The utility of a toner prior to physical or enzyme-based exfoliation is often debated in terms of product efficacy. Applying a toner serves to standardize the surface of the stratum corneum, ensuring that the subsequent exfoliant encounters a hydrated rather than a parched surface. This process facilitates more uniform distribution of particles or agents.

Understanding the mechanics of your chosen toner is essential to determining if it aids the process. Proper prep minimizes potential friction and ensures the exfoliant adheres to the skin surface without causing undue drag.

  1. Cleanse the surface. Begin with a neutral, non-stripping cleanser to remove surface debris and oils. Rinse thoroughly with tepid water and pat the skin until it is slightly damp. Starting with a clean base prevents the toner from pushing surface impurities into the pores.
  2. Apply your toner. Dispense a small amount of toner into the palms of your hands or onto a soft cotton pad. Press the liquid gently into the skin in an upward motion. Ensure the skin feels supple but not dripping wet before you stop.
  3. Wait for calibration. Allow the toner to settle for approximately fifteen seconds. The skin should retain its dampness. Do not wait for the skin to dry completely, as a slightly moist surface facilitates easier glide for the subsequent exfoliant.
  4. Apply the exfoliant. Distribute your chosen exfoliant evenly across the prepped area. The presence of the toner will act as a buffer, preventing the product from grabbing too aggressively in drier zones. Use light, circular motions to achieve uniform coverage.
A hydrated surface is a predictable surface when using manual or enzymatic exfoliants.
