Niacinamide Concentrations Explained
Niacinamide has become a standard inclusion in skincare, often cited for its ability to refine texture and assist with uneven tone. Because it is water-soluble, brands frequently include it in high concentrations, sometimes pushing labels to reach 10% or higher. More is not inherently superior in topical application.
Higher concentrations often require careful balancing with the rest of your routine to avoid irritation. Distinguishing between effective inclusion levels and marketing-led excess is essential for integrating the ingredient without compromising the skin barrier.
- Cleanse the skin surface. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove environmental debris. Pat the skin dry using a clean towel. Do not rub the face, as friction may increase sensitivity to subsequent active ingredients.
- Apply a low-concentration serum. Dispense three to four drops of a niacinamide serum containing 2% to 5% active content. Apply by pressing the liquid into the skin with flat palms rather than dragging it across the surface. This pressure ensures even distribution without excessive movement.
- Allow for complete absorption. Wait two minutes before moving to the next product. Niacinamide can interact with the tackiness of other formulas if applied too quickly. The skin should feel dry to the touch before proceeding.
- Seal with a basic moisturizer. Follow with a simple, fragrance-free moisturizer. This locks in the serum and prevents the evaporation of moisture from the surface. Avoid thick ointments if you are prone to congestion.
- Apply sunscreen. If performing this routine in the morning, finish with a broad-spectrum sunscreen. Niacinamide does not increase sun sensitivity, but consistent protection is necessary to see improvements in uneven tone.
