Reactive vs Sensitised: Knowing the Distinction

Distinguishing between reactive skin and sensitised skin is the difference between management and repair. Reactive skin is a genetic baseline, where the skin barrier is naturally thinner and responds predictably to heat, cold, or friction. Sensitised skin, conversely, is an acute state of distress resulting from environmental stressors, product misuse, or barrier compromise.

Understanding which category you occupy allows you to stop over-treating healthy skin and start rehabilitating damaged tissue. This guide outlines the diagnostic steps required to calm the surface and restore equilibrium.

  1. Eliminate all active products. For fourteen days, remove all products containing acids, enzymes, or concentrated extracts. Strip your routine down to a gentle cleanser, a simple moisturizer, and a mineral-based sunscreen. This creates a neutral environment to assess your skin's true temperament.
  2. Observe the reaction time. Monitor how your skin responds to your basic routine. If the skin remains tight or flushed immediately after cleansing, your barrier is likely compromised and sensitised. If it feels comfortable but reacts only to external friction or wind, it is likely genetically reactive.
  3. Evaluate environmental triggers. Test your skin against controlled environments. Walk outside for ten minutes; if the skin reddens instantly, you are dealing with a classic reactive trait. If the skin burns or stings when applying moisturizer, you are dealing with a sensitised, damaged barrier.
  4. Hydrate the surface. Apply a basic occlusive layer to trap hydration. Focus on ingredients like glycerin or petrolatum, which shield the skin from air and movement. Apply while the skin is slightly damp to lock in surface moisture.
  5. Assess the rebound. By the end of the second week, look for a reduction in baseline redness. Sensitised skin should show significant improvement, while reactive skin will remain unchanged but calm. This confirms whether you are treating a temporary fault or a permanent state.
Sensitised skin is a temporary state of distress; reactive skin is a lifelong temperament.
