Sun Protection for Sensitive Skin
Sun exposure remains the primary external factor in skin irritation. For those with sensitive skin, the choice of protective product is often more important than the SPF rating itself. The goal is to establish a reliable barrier that reflects environmental stressors while maintaining the integrity of the moisture mantle.
Refining your sun care process involves prioritizing physical filters and consistent application methods. This guide outlines the mechanics of selecting and layering SPF effectively.
- Cleanse the surface. Begin with a neutral, non-foaming cleanser to remove debris from the previous night. Pat the skin completely dry with a clean cotton towel. Do not rub, as friction can trigger unnecessary flushing.
- Apply moisture. Apply a basic humectant-based moisturizer to create a smooth canvas. Allow this to absorb for one minute before proceeding. This ensures the sunscreen does not absorb into the deeper layers but sits properly as a filter.
- Distribute the filter. Dot the mineral SPF across the forehead, cheeks, and chin. Start with a pea-sized amount per zone. Ensure you cover the ears and the hairline, as these are frequently neglected areas.
- Press, do not swipe. Use the pads of your fingers to press the product into the skin in downward motions. Swiping drags the formula and creates gaps in the protection. Ensure the product appears uniform across the entire face.
- Allow set time. Wait at least five minutes before applying any other surface products. This allows the mineral particles to form a stable film on the skin. Avoid direct sun contact during this window.
A consistent, physical barrier is the most reliable defense for reactive skin.
