A Guide to Patch Testing Essential Oils

Essential oils are concentrated plant extracts that require careful handling when applied to the skin. Because these substances are highly potent, they are prone to causing adverse reactions if used in their raw state or if the skin is hyper-sensitive to specific botanical components. Patch testing is not a suggestion; it is the only way to establish a baseline of tolerance for a new product.

  1. Select your testing site. Choose a clear, uncompromised area of skin. The inner forearm or behind the ear are the standard locations because they are typically shielded from excessive sun exposure and friction. Ensure the area is clean and free of existing product residue.
  2. Prepare the test substance. Essential oils must be diluted in a carrier oil before testing. Use a neutral base such as jojoba or sweet almond oil. Aim for a dilution ratio of no more than one percent, which translates to one drop of essential oil in one teaspoon of carrier oil. Mix thoroughly in a small glass vessel.
  3. Apply the mixture. Apply a small amount of the diluted mixture to your chosen site using a clean cotton swab. Keep the patch size limited to approximately one square inch. Allow the mixture to air dry for several minutes before covering it with a bandage if you anticipate external friction.
  4. Monitor the site. Leave the product on the skin for twenty-four hours. Avoid scrubbing, washing, or applying other products to the test area during this interval. It is critical to keep the patch dry and undisturbed to ensure the results are not compromised by outside variables.
  5. Observe the reaction. After twenty-four hours have passed, remove the bandage if used. Inspect the skin for any visual changes such as redness, swelling, or the formation of bumps. If no negative signs are present, repeat the test on the same spot for a second consecutive day to account for delayed sensitivity.
