Managing Under-Eye Milia at Home
Small, firm, white bumps residing beneath the skin surface are generally identified as milia. These are keratin-filled cysts trapped beneath the outer layer of the epidermis, often occurring in areas where the skin is thinnest and most prone to moisture accumulation. While they appear similar to acne, they lack an opening to the surface and cannot be extracted like a standard comedone.
Addressing these formations requires a adjustment in topical product selection rather than mechanical intervention. Focus on lightweight hydration and the avoidance of occlusive heavy creams that can seal the pore and encourage further accumulation.
- Gentle surface cleansing. Use a water-based, pH-balanced cleanser to remove makeup and environmental debris. Avoid heavy cleansing balms or oil-based formulas near the orbital bone. Gently pat the area dry with a clean, lint-free cloth rather than rubbing.
- Application of lightweight humectants. Apply a serum formulated with hyaluronic acid or glycerin to provide hydration without density. Avoid rich emollients, shea butter, or heavy oils that may create an occlusive barrier. Focus application strictly on the orbital bone, avoiding the lash line entirely.
- Gentle manual exfoliation. Once weekly, utilize a mild, non-abrasive washcloth or a soft silicone tool to perform light mechanical exfoliation. Use circular motions with zero weight behind your fingers. This encourages the natural sloughing of dead skin cells that may otherwise trap keratin.
- Sun protection. Apply a mineral-based sunscreen specifically tested for the eye area. Chemical filters can sometimes cause irritation in sensitive skin, potentially leading to inflammation. A physical barrier provides protection without risk of clogging.
- Evaluation. Monitor the area for signs of redness or increased bump activity. If the skin appears irritated, revert to a basic water-only cleanse for forty-eight hours. Persistence is more effective than aggressive treatment.
Milia are not acne; attempting to force their exit will only damage the surrounding skin.
