Protecting the Neck Under Clothing

UV exposure accumulates regardless of textile coverage, particularly when fabrics are lightweight or woven loosely. The skin on the neck and décolletage is thin and prone to early texture shifts, necessitating a dedicated approach that goes beyond the facial application.

Applying sunscreen to this area requires more than a residual swipe from your palms. You must treat the neck as a distinct zone to ensure full protection underneath your collars and scarves.

  1. Clean the neck circumference. Begin by removing any overnight buildup or residues from the neck area using a damp cloth. A clean surface allows the product to anchor directly to the skin rather than sitting atop oils. Pat the skin until it is completely dry before moving to the next phase.
  2. Apply sunscreen in sections. Dispense a nickel-sized amount of SPF into your fingers. Apply one portion to the front of the neck and a second portion to the back, using vertical, sweeping motions. Extend the product down to the collarbone to ensure no gaps are left near the neckline of your garments.
  3. Allow for complete setting. Wait at least sixty seconds before dressing. If you apply clothing while the sunscreen is still wet, the fabric will absorb the product, effectively removing it from your skin. This setting period is critical for maintaining an intact protective layer.
  4. Check collar friction. Once the product is set, adjust your collar to ensure it rests comfortably against the protected skin. If you are wearing a high-necked sweater or a stiff collar, avoid pulling or rubbing the fabric against the skin repeatedly. Minimize physical contact with the neck area throughout the day.
A thin layer of fabric does not act as a complete barrier to UV rays.
