Layering Serums Without Pilling
Pilling occurs when topical formulas do not fully absorb or when incompatible textures are forced together. This creates unsightly clumps on the surface of the skin, rendering the product ineffective and aesthetically unpleasing. By adjusting your application technique and respecting the viscosity of your formulas, you can layer multiple serums seamlessly.
The secret lies in the order of operations and the timing of your movements. Speed is the enemy of absorption.
- Begin with a clean surface. Cleanse your skin thoroughly to remove existing residue or sweat. Pat your skin dry using a clean towel. Ensure there is no residual water, as excess moisture can thin your serums and disrupt their absorption rate.
- Apply lowest viscosity first. Dispense the thinnest formula into your palm. Press the product into your skin using flat, firm palms rather than rubbing. Wait for the skin to feel slightly tacky before moving to the next layer.
- Incorporate the second layer. Apply your second serum with the same pressing motion. Avoid circular motions, which can encourage the previous layer to lift or roll. Focus the product on areas that need the most hydration.
- Seal with a finishing product. Once the final serum is applied, wait at least three minutes before applying a moisturizer. This cooling-down period allows the serums to fully penetrate the superficial layers of the skin. Applying a moisturizer too soon is the most common cause of pilling.
Wait for the tackiness to disappear completely before moving to the next layer of your routine.
