Applying SPF After Moisturiser: The Correct Order
Applying sun protection is a non-negotiable step in any daily routine. The concern frequently arises regarding whether it should precede or follow your daily moisturiser. For optimal performance, sunscreen must be the final step of your skin preparation before any cosmetic products.
Layering requires patience to ensure the product remains evenly distributed. Rushing the process often results in pilling or uneven coverage, which undermines the efficacy of the filter.
- Allow moisturiser to set. After applying your moisturiser, wait sixty seconds for the product to absorb fully. If the surface of the skin feels tacky or wet, the subsequent layer of sunscreen will shift the moisturiser and create streaks. Use this time to tidy your vanity.
- Measure the required amount. Squeeze two strips of sunscreen along the length of your index and middle fingers. This measurement serves as a reliable proxy for the recommended amount for the face and neck. Consistency in volume is essential for the intended protection.
- Distribute via tapping. Rather than rubbing the product in one motion, dot the sunscreen across your forehead, cheeks, nose, and chin. Use your fingertips to tap the product into the skin gently. Tapping ensures the protective film remains uniform and does not displace the moisturiser underneath.
- Allow the film to settle. Once the product is spread evenly, leave the skin untouched for two minutes. This settling period allows the protective ingredients to form a stable film. Avoid touching your face during this time to prevent gaps in coverage.
- Final check. Inspect the hairline and the bridge of the nose for any missed spots or excess product buildup. Use a dry fingertip to smooth out any visible creases around the eyes or mouth. Your skin should appear matte or slightly dewy, but not greasy.
Consistency in application volume is more important than the specific brand of the product used.
