intro: "Most people know where their nails grow from in the most general sense — the base of the finger. Few understand what is actually happening at that point, or why it matters for everything from cuticle condition to gel adhesion to the way a nail breaks. The proximal fold is the fold of skin at the very base of the nail plate. Underneath it, at the nail matrix, is where the cells that become nail plate are produced. The thin, often-translucent skin visible at the nail base — the one people push back or cut off — is the exposed edge of that fold. How this fold is treated determines the health of the nail growth beneath it. Compress it with tight footwear. Flood it with aggressive gel application that lifts at the fold. Cut into it and disturb the matrix. All of these affect the growth line, and all of them affect the nail that comes out the other side. This page covers the anatomy of the growth line, how to read it for signs of health or compression, and what gel lifting at the proximal fold means.",

body: "The nail matrix is the tissue under the proximal fold — the fold of skin at the very base of the nail. It is the nail factory. Cells in the matrix multiply and differentiate into the hard keratinised plate that becomes the nail. The lunula — the pale crescent at the nail base — is the visible part of the matrix. The proximal fold itself is the layer of skin that overlies it and seals it from external exposure. When people refer to 'the growth line' they mean the visible boundary between the proximal fold and the emerging nail plate. A healthy growth line is smooth, consistent across the nail's width, and without visible ridging, compression marks, or lifted edges. Reading it gives a reliable picture of what has been happening to the nail over the previous several weeks.",
