Retinol is a derivative of vitamin A frequently utilized for its ability to encourage surface-level cell turnover. When introduced to the skin, it influences the appearance of fine lines and overall texture by shedding dead cells at an accelerated rate.
This process is inherently light-sensitive and can render the skin temporarily fragile. Consequently, it must be restricted to nighttime use to avoid degradation of the ingredient and to provide the skin with a restorative window.
- Cleanse and dry thoroughly. Use a gentle, non-stripping cleanser to remove environmental pollutants from the day. Pat your face completely dry with a clean towel. Applying retinol to damp skin can increase penetration too rapidly, leading to irritation.
- Apply a buffer layer. If you are new to this ingredient, apply a lightweight, plain moisturizer first. This acts as a barrier, slowing the absorption of the retinol. Once absorbed, proceed to the next step.
- Dispense the pea-sized amount. Dispense a pea-sized amount of the retinol product onto your fingertip. Dot the product across your forehead, cheeks, and chin. Distribute evenly, avoiding the delicate skin immediately surrounding the eyes and the corners of the mouth.
- Seal with a final layer. Allow the retinol to sink into the skin for several minutes until it feels dry to the touch. Apply a final, thin layer of your chosen moisturizer over the top to lock in hydration and prevent transepidermal water loss.
- Rest and recover. Sleep in a cool, dark environment to allow the ingredient to work without the interference of ultraviolet light or heat. Keep the bedroom humidity stable if possible, as retinol can exacerbate dryness in arid climates.
Consistent, low-concentration application always yields more sustainable results than aggressive, infrequent use.
