How to Choose the Right Hair Brush
Your hair type determines your brush type—fine hair needs soft bristles, thick hair needs firm bristles, and wet hair needs wide-tooth combs or detangling brushes.
Stop buying brushes based on Instagram videos—your hair density is fixed, so learn it once and stick with what actually works for your specific texture.
- Assess your hair density and texture. Hold a section of hair up to the light. Fine hair looks sparse and individual strands are barely visible, while thick hair creates an opaque curtain. Your density matters more than your curl pattern when choosing bristles.
- Match bristle type to your needs. Boar bristles distribute oil and add shine but only work on fine to medium hair. Nylon bristles detangle without breaking thick or coarse hair. Mixed bristle brushes combine both benefits for medium-density hair.
- Consider your styling goals. Round brushes create volume and smooth blowouts—choose barrel size based on your hair length. Paddle brushes quickly smooth long hair without volume. Vent brushes speed up drying time.
- Test the brush on your scalp. Press bristles against your palm with the same pressure you'd use on your head. They should feel firm but not sharp or scratchy. Your scalp sensitivity determines how stiff your bristles can be.
