How to Build a Minimalist Skincare Routine

Start with cleanser, moisturizer, and SPF, then add one targeted treatment only if your skin actually needs it.

Most people's skin problems come from using too many products, not too few.

  1. Choose your cleanser. Pick one gentle cleanser that removes makeup and sunscreen without stripping your skin. If it leaves your face feeling tight or squeaky, it's too harsh. Oil cleansers work for most skin types, gel cleansers for oily skin.
  2. Find your moisturizer. One good moisturizer should work for both morning and night unless you live in extreme climates. Look for something that absorbs well under sunscreen and feels comfortable for 12 hours. Skip separate eye creams unless your regular moisturizer irritates that area.
  3. Commit to daily SPF. Choose a broad-spectrum SPF 30 or higher that you'll actually use every day. The best sunscreen is the one you don't mind reapplying. Tinted formulas work if you want coverage without separate makeup.
  4. Add one treatment maximum. Only add a fourth product if you have a specific concern that the basics don't address. Retinol for aging, niacinamide for oil control, or vitamin C for brightness. Use it consistently for three months before deciding if it works.
