How to Transition to Natural Hair

Stop chemical processing and gradually trim relaxed ends while maintaining moisture and protective styling for 12-18 months.

Transitioning is 80% patience and 20% technique—most people fail because they expect their hair to behave like relaxed hair when it simply won't.

  1. Set your timeline. Decide between transitioning gradually or doing a big chop. Gradual transitions take 12-18 months as you trim relaxed ends every 6-8 weeks. Big chop means cutting all processed hair immediately.
  2. Establish a moisture routine. Wash weekly with sulfate-free shampoo and deep condition every wash. Use leave-in conditioner on damp hair and seal with oil or butter daily.
  3. Protect the line of demarcation. The point where natural hair meets relaxed hair is fragile and breaks easily. Handle gently, avoid tight styles, and trim regularly to prevent splits traveling up.
  4. Master protective styles. Braids, twists, buns, and updos minimize manipulation and hide the texture difference. Keep styles loose and change them every 1-2 weeks to prevent breakage.
  5. Learn your natural texture. Your hair pattern may differ from what you remember. Experiment with styling techniques like twist-outs, braid-outs, and wash-and-go methods as more natural hair grows in.
