How to Clarify Hair Without Stripping It

Use a clarifying shampoo once a week, focus on the scalp, and always follow with deep conditioning to remove buildup without damaging your hair.

Most people clarify too often then wonder why their hair feels like straw โ€” once a week maximum, and always condition after, or you're creating more problems than you're solving.

  1. Pre-clarify prep. Wet hair thoroughly with lukewarm water to open the cuticles. Skip any pre-wash oils or treatments โ€” you want your hair ready to release buildup, not create barriers.
  2. Apply clarifying shampoo. Work a quarter-sized amount into your scalp using fingertips, not nails. Focus on the roots where oil and product residue accumulate most. Let it sit for 2-3 minutes to break down stubborn buildup.
  3. Rinse and repeat if needed. Rinse completely with cool water to seal the cuticles. If your hair still feels heavy or looks dull, repeat once more with a smaller amount of product.
  4. Deep condition immediately. Apply a protein-free deep conditioner from mid-length to ends. Leave for 5-10 minutes to restore moisture that clarifying removes. Your hair should feel clean but not squeaky.
