How to Use a Cold-Rinse Finish for Shine

A cold water rinse at the end of your wash routine seals hair cuticles flat for instant shine.

  1. Finish your regular routine. Complete your normal shampoo and conditioning process with lukewarm water. Your hair should be clean and conditioned before the cold rinse step.
  2. Turn the temperature down. Switch to the coldest water you can tolerate. The shock factor matters less than consistency—aim for genuinely cold, not just cool.
  3. Rinse for 30 seconds. Let the cold water run through your hair from roots to ends. Focus on full coverage rather than scrubbing or massaging.
  4. Gently squeeze out excess. Press water from your hair without wringing or rough toweling. The cuticles are now sealed and more vulnerable to friction damage.
